Move over traditional hen do — there’s a calmer, more luxurious way to celebrate.
Meet the Zen Do, also known as the Zen Hen: a modern alternative to the traditional hen weekend, combining celebration with wellness, relaxation and quality time with your favourite people.
Think yoga and Pilates, massages and spa treatments, sound baths, beautiful food, countryside walks and long, relaxed evenings together — without feeling as though the whole weekend has to revolve around drinking and late nights.
At Norfolk House in Yorkshire, we’re seeing more brides looking for exactly this kind of hen weekend: something luxurious and memorable that leaves everyone feeling refreshed rather than needing another weekend to recover!
So, what exactly is a Zen Do — and how do you plan the perfect Zen Hen weekend?
What Is a Zen Do or Zen Hen?
A Zen Do is a wellness-focused alternative to the traditional hen do. It’s still a celebration — just one that puts relaxation, friendship and feeling good at the heart of the weekend.
For some brides, that might mean morning yoga followed by brunch, massages and an afternoon in the hot tub. For others, it could be Pilates, a sound bath, a countryside walk, a creative workshop or a gorgeous dinner cooked by a private chef.
And a Zen Hen? That’s our name for the bride who loves the idea of celebrating this way. She might still enjoy a glass of fizz or a cocktail (this isn’t a boot camp!), but she’d rather spend her hen weekend genuinely enjoying time with her favourite people than rushing from one activity to the next.
The lovely thing about a Zen Do is that there are no rules. You can make the weekend as relaxing, indulgent, healthy — or boozy — as your bride wants it to be.
What Does a Zen Hen Weekend Look Like?
The beauty of a Zen Do is that you can create a weekend that flows at a much more relaxed pace. No military-style itinerary and no herding 20 hens from one place to another! Here’s what a gorgeous wellness hen weekend at Norfolk House could look like…
Friday – Arrive, Unwind & Settle In
Arrive at Norfolk House, pop the fizz (or your favourite alcohol-free alternative) and settle in. There’s no need to rush straight back out again – get the playlist on, order in some gorgeous food, catch up with everyone and let the weekend begin.
You could start your Zen Do with grazing boards and cocktails, a relaxed dinner around the table, or simply PJs, the hot tub and a proper girls’ night in.
Saturday Morning – Move, Breathe & Brunch
Start Saturday slowly with a private yoga or Pilates session at Norfolk House. No taxis, no rushing out of the door and no worrying about different ability levels — just roll out the mats and enjoy doing something together.
Follow it with a gorgeous, leisurely brunch. Think fresh fruit, pastries, granola, pancakes, great coffee and maybe a mimosa or two. After all, Zen doesn’t have to mean completely virtuous!
Then give everyone a little breathing space. Have a coffee, jump in the hot tub, get showered, chat in your PJs — whatever your group fancies. One of the nicest things about a Zen Hen is not having every minute of the weekend scheduled.
Saturday Afternoon – Your Own Private Spa
This is where your Zen Do can really slow down.
At Norfolk House, we can arrange spa and pamper treatments to come to you, so while some of the hens are enjoying a massage or treatment, everyone else can relax, chat, enjoy the hot tub or simply do absolutely nothing for a while. No taxis, no getting dressed up and no clock-watching.
You can also add a sound bath to your weekend for a wonderfully calming group experience — perfect after a busy Friday night or before getting ready for Saturday evening.
And this is only the beginning.
We’re currently creating something very special behind the scenes at Norfolk House: our Hidden Room, which will take the whole Zen Do experience to another level.
Once it opens, we’ll be able to create a much more immersive wellness experience within the house — a hidden space designed for switching off, slowing down and giving your group something completely unexpected.
Until then, your Zen Hen can still enjoy our existing wellness options, including yoga, Pilates, spa and pamper treatments, sound baths and plenty of hot-tub time, all without having to spend your weekend travelling from one venue to another.
Prefer to get out of the house for your morning session? We can also arrange a visit to our local yoga studio, giving your hens a lovely change of scenery before heading back to Norfolk House for brunch and the rest of your Zen Do.

Saturday Outdoors – Make the Most of Greenhead Park
One of the lovely things about staying at Norfolk House is having beautiful Greenhead Park almost opposite the house, giving your Zen Hen even more space to get outside.
Take your yoga session into the park, organise a fun hen party scavenger hunt, try a gentle boot camp or get everyone together for an old-school game of rounders. Or forget the organised activities altogether — grab a coffee, take a stroll around the park, say hello to the ducks and enjoy some fresh air before heading back to Norfolk House.
For something slower, you could bring a picnic, try some outdoor meditation or breathwork, or simply find a lovely spot to sit and catch up.
Saturday Evening – Good Food, Fizz & Time Together
A Zen Do doesn’t mean the fun stops when the yoga mats are rolled away! Saturday evening can be as relaxed or as lively as your bride wants it to be.
Stay in and make the most of having Norfolk House to yourselves. You could book a private chef, dress up for dinner, mix cocktails, put your favourite playlist on and spend the evening eating, drinking and laughing around the table.
Or keep things beautifully low-key with grazing boards, PJs, games and a long evening in the hot tub.
The point of a Zen Hen isn’t to create the “perfect” wellness weekend. It’s about taking away the pressure to do what a hen party is supposed to look like and creating a celebration that genuinely feels like your bride.
And if your Zen Do carries on after dark, stargazing is another gorgeous idea. You can head outside or stay even closer to home and do it from our roof terrace at Norfolk House.
Why Are Zen Dos and Zen Hens Becoming So Popular?
Hen weekends are changing.
Not every bride wants a packed itinerary, matching outfits and two nights of non-stop drinking. More and more groups are looking for alternative hen party ideas that give everyone a chance to relax, reconnect and actually enjoy being together.
That’s why the Zen Do and Zen Hen are becoming such lovely alternatives to the traditional hen weekend. You can still dress up, drink cocktails, laugh until your face hurts and celebrate properly — but you can balance all of that with wellness, gorgeous food, fresh air and a little time to slow down.
It also works beautifully for mixed-age hen groups. When mums, sisters, aunties and friends are all coming together, activities such as yoga, spa treatments, private dining and creative workshops can be much more inclusive than building the entire weekend around nightlife.
